When the Levees Broke

Quotation- “I knew it was devistation but I didn’t know it was this bad.” I can’t imagine coming back to see your house which was destroyed by the hurricane.
Talking Point- Listening to the guy talk about coming back to his mother’s home was horrible. There was markings on the house saying it was checked but all of the doors and windows were locked and barred. How could people just say they checked the house when they actually didn’t? Because of these people, this man had to face coming back and finding his mom’s dead body. It’s so horrible that residents had to come home to dead bodies in their houses.
Connection- Seeing all of the trash in piles and the lines of refrigerators reminded me of in the movie Wall-E. In the movie, Wall-E would organize the piles of trash and make them into blocks to take up less space. Also, the residents on Earth went into space until the trash was all cleaned up. It’s similar to the residents of New Orleans not going back home because of all the trash.

Quotation- “For 5 days we flooded, Bush strutted from press conference to press conference.” This was spray painted on some column or wall in New Orleans. They showed their feelings along with verbally expressing it.
Talking Point- I can’t imagine how these people feel not being around their family and friends. Being put into another city far from home would make it difficult to get back once things calm down. It’s almost like the government was forcing people to start over in a different city. I hope I never have to go through starting over all by myself after something like this.
Connection- Kayne West made a comment on air that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” and it reminded me of MTV’s VMAs. Taylor Swift won best music video or something. Kayne got ahold of the microphone and said something along the lines of “I’m gonna let you finish but Beyonce’s was better.” It just shows how blunt he is.

Quotation- “When there’s a crisis, all political bs needs to go to the side.” I’m not positive on who said this. I wrote it down becauseĀ totally agree with it.
Talking Point- With the federal government not helping out, it makes people not believe in their own government anymore. How could Bush not know about the hurricane’s aftermath until four days after it hit? How could homeland security not name it as a natural disaster so the citizens could get help? Everyone was in hysteria on the media but still the government did not respond. I don’t understand how they could act as if they didn’t care.
Connection- On the video, they were saying how President Lyndon B. Johnson came down to New Orleans after hurricane Betsy hit. It reminded me of how my mom said that LBJ came to Elkhart after the Palm Sunday tornadoes tore through. He showed up to both locations of natural disasters in the same year showing he cared.

Quotation- “It was beyond Africa heat.” This comment madme laugh with how she was saying it was so hot and how she wouldn’t go back to Africa becaue of the heat.
Talking Point- It’s so amazing to me how the citizens treat each other. At first they help each other out right after the hurricane hits. Then they start stealing and shooting at each other. Everyone of them are in the same situation and should continue to help each other out instead of hurting each other.
Connection- Canada and Venezuala are helping out Louisiana after the hurricane and it reminds me of how the U.S. always helps out other countries after natural disasters. For example, the U.S. helped out after the tsunami a couple years ago.

Quotation- “Remember what this looks like,” a New Orleans resident said to his wife. She asked, “Why?” and he responded with, “The memory is all we are going to have left of this place.” It’s so sad that they have to leave knowing that they may never see their home and the surroundings again. I can’t imagine the feeling.
Talking Point- I don’t understand why people still wouldn’t leave after the governor issued an immediate evacuation. I understand some people didn’t have any way of transportation but some of the people who did stayed. I would rather survive than stay in my house with all of my belongings than try to live through a category 5 hurricane.
Connection- There was this man in the video talking about the noise of the hurricane. He said how it was so horrible, loud, and deafening. His description reminded me of my grandpa’s e-mail after hurricane Charley hit Punta Gorda, Florida. My grandpa and his girlfriend stayed in their apartment building to ride out the hurricane. He told us that the sound was so loud and terrifying and when the eye was over them, it became very eerie knowing it was only half over.
