Utopia

Everyone is affected by the rising price of prescription drugs, including the pharmaceutical companies, which is why the government should seize control before it’s too late. Because of the pharmaceutical companies’ need for research and development funds, the cost of these drugs have increased faster than the cost of consumer goods . These claimed funds are used for advertisement and for lobbying of their prescription drug to the public. The problem is, the public does not have the extra money to spend on the high priced, brand name drugs. Although there are programs to help out the senior citizens and the disabled with the cost of their medicines, these don’t help everyone else to afford theirs. Because of the cost, some people aren’t taking their medicine properly causing them to endanger their health more. Also, other countries like Canada have lower prices than the U.S. but it’s not reasonable for everyone to travel out of the nation to get their prescriptions. In response to the claims of high prices, the pharmaceutical companies say that on average it takes them 12 years to bring to the market a new drug making research and development expensive due to trial and error. The new medicines are benefiting patients by lowering medical visits, hospital stays, and time lossed at work. Also, to help people out, the companies offer patient-assistance programs to help out the needy Americans who aren’t seniors or disabled. Although all of the response sound good, they aren’t helping. The assistance programs only last for a limited time, which doesn’t last the length of consumer’s use. Also, not everyone can afford the medicine to be able to experience the benefits of less time at medical visits, less hospital stays, and less time missed at work/school. Because of these issues with high priced prescription drugs, the government needs to become involved to help the public afford their medicine.
