Fast Food Nation

QTPC #28

Quotation- page 230 “Thousands of people waited patiently for hours to eat at the city’s first McDonald’s in 1992. Two years later, when a McDonald’s opened in Kuwait, the lines of cars waiting at the drive-through window extended seven miles.”

It’s such a shock to read about the first McDonald’s in other countries. I never knew that it was so popular and I can’t believe that people would wait for so long just to eat the food.

Talking Point- It’s horrible that the fast food industry has more power over U.S. citizens than the government. Fast food places have been able to influence people at a young age through advertisement and these people continue to eat fast food as they grow older because it taste so good. The government has not been able to influence toddlers to want to become more involved. Also, fast food industries seem to be wealthier than the government because they are able to franchise overseas and can open five new stores a day while our government keeps racking up the national debt.

Connection- Fast Food Nation in general kind of reminds me of the documentary Super Size Me. The movie shows how horrible McDonald’s food is for your body when the guy decides to eat it three times a day for a month. This book explains in more detail how bad the food is and the history of it.

Quotation- page 199 “E. coli O157:H7 is a mutated version of a bacterium found abundantly in the human digestive system. Most E. coli bacteria help us digest food, synthesize vitamins, and guard against dangerous organisms. E. coli O157:H7, on other hand, can release a powerful toxin- called a ‘verotoxin’ or a ‘Shiga toxin’- that attacks the lining of the intestine.”

I didn’t know that our bodies use E. coli to do stuff. After hearing about the E. coli found in beef, I thought that it was bad for you but now I know that its a certain type of E. coli that’s harmful to the body.

Talking Point- All of the stories about the slaughterhouse made me sick. I can’t believe the government hasn’t stepped in to take more control. It’s ridiculous that people who get an injury on the job are still forced to work and nasty jobs too. It’s ruining their injury while they should be getting worker’s compensation. It’s not right that these workers have to live like this.

Connection- page 172- “As the ramp gently slopes upward, the animals may think they’re headed for another truck, another road trip- and they are, in unexpected ways.” This statement reminds me of the Jews in Nazi Germany. They would be forced into buildings where they thought they were going to shower but instead they’d be gassed. Sometimes, they would be put on trains and they’d think they were going someplace only to be left in the cars to die.

Quotation- page 91 “… and snobs up north still call it ‘the asshole of Colorado’”. I thought this comment was really funny.

Talking Point- Reading about the start of chicken nuggets was really interesting. I’ve never thought about how they started or them not being around. It’s weird to think that technicians had to come up with the idea of how to create them.

Connection- On page 144, the author was talking about how Colorado’s ranchland is being developed which reminded me of Elkhart. Elkhart’s farmland is being turned inoto roads, factories, schools, and stores. Right now they are building an Ivy Tech where houses and a forest used to be.

Quotation- page 16 “They rarely consider where this food came from, how it was made, what it is doing to the community around them. They just grab their tray off the counter, find a table, take a sear, unwrap the paper, and dig in.”

This statement is so true. Even after working at a fast food restaurant for a year I still don’t think about the food before I eat. I just dive right in.

Talking Point- On pages 22-23, the author was describing people’s backgrounds. It’s hard to believe that men who dropped out of school and worked at several low-wage jobs started fast food franchises like Burger King, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ Donuts, etc. Nowadays, it takes a college education and a lot of money to be able to start up a company.

Connection- Page 44 was talking about a book by McNeal that described the seven kinds of nagging. I used to use these all the time on my parents and like McNeal said, I found a couple that worked best on them. I still use nagging today because I know it will work at times.
